For visitors who are coming only to Lisbon and immediate surroundings a car may be more of a hindrance than a help. Streets in the centre can be very narrow, parking can be difficult, there are a myriad of rules, such as an almost universal prohibition on turning left, and the driving style may leave those from more sedate countries nervous. Having said that, getting to a hotel or parking area and just using a car to visit surroundings sights (e.g. the castles and palaces of Sintra) should not be more difficult than in most European cities. So, don’t fear driving here, just be aware.
