Clube de Fado - In the heart of what is perhaps the most celebrated area for Fado, Alfama, close to the Lisbon Cathedral, this is an atmospheric spot for Fado. Friendly service and the good traditional Portuguese food is accompanied by professional and amateur Fado singers. If you’re a budding talent, or just an extrovert, you’ll most probably be able to get them to give you a chance too.

Adega do Machado – A Fado house in the Bairro Alto and one of the oldest in Lisbon, still a favourite. It is also popular with foreign visitors and one can still feel the spirit of the great singers who performed there in the past.

Faia - Almost as old as Adega do Machado. Celebrated Fado artists who have performed at this restaurant cum Fado house include Lucília do Carmo, Carlos do Carmo, Ada de Castro, Vasco Rafael and Camané. Expensive, but the food is top notch.

Café Luso - Housed in an old coach-house and wine cellar belonging to the São Roque Palace, one of the few buildings that survived the 1755 earthquake. The original vaults date back to the 17th century and were once host to singers like Amália Rodrigues and Tony de Matos.

Parreirinha de Alfama - One of the oldest and best-known Fado houses in Lisbon attracts large groups, so you should reserve your table, as it is generally crowded.
