The incoming international access code for Portugal is +351 and the outgoing code is 00 followed by the relevant country code, for example 00 44 for the UK. Portugal is well covered by three GSM mobile phone networks and more than 50% of calls made here originate from cell phones (the EU average is 30%). The country was a pioneer of the prepayment system, which was invented by a Portuguese. There are three main operators: TMN (prefix 96 or 92), Vodafone (91) and Optimus (93). All of them have shops in major shopping centres and other spots around town. Vodafone is the market leader for business users and has the highest percentage of third-generation technology clients in Europe.
