Lisbon has a good mix of some spectacular and some unusual museums. Close to the top of the bill must be world class Gulbenkian Museum, which not only houses an awesome collection but whose building and surrounding gardens are themselves attractions. Include watching a performance here and you’ll find that you’ve spent most of your day very pleasantly.
You’re spoilt for choice in the modern art department, with the Belém Cultural Centre housing an excellent international collection and the Gulbenkian Modern Art Center and the National Modern Art Museum in Chiado focussing more on Portuguese work. In the applied arts section you won’t want to miss the Design and Fashion Museum in Baixa, the Tile Museum or the Ajuda Palace Museum.
For the more unusual of museums, look no further than the Puppet and Coach Museums, and considering Portugal’s maritime heritage, the Maritime Museum in Belém should also be towards the top of your list.
