Created by US designers Cambridge Seven Associates, Europe’s largest aquarium offers an incredible array of live sea life inside five enormous glass tanks simulating Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Antarctic and Arctic Ocean environments. A mega central tank contains large fish such as hammerhead sharks, manta rays and other displays contain penguins and seagulls. From the outside the steel framed building looks like a huge galleon complete with tall glass masts and sails protruding above and supporting the roof’s wide glass panes. Chief architect Peter Chermayeff designed the immense split-level tanks in order to allow visitors to walk above, below and alongside a huge assortment of rays, sharks, fish, penguins, corals, and multicoloured plant life. See if you can spot the “leafy sea dragon”, which is a sea horse disguised as a plant. Open in summer 10:00 - 20:00 and in winter until 19:00. Tel: 21 891 7002/6. |
