Santuário do Cristo Rei |
An 82 m pedestal topped with a 38 m statue of Christ stands with outstretched arms on the south bank of the River Tagus, in Almada, overlooking the whole city from its vantage point. The statue was inaugurated in 1959, the Archbishop of Lisbon having been inspired in 1934 by the larger statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio. As in Rio, you can travel to the top of the Lisbon statue in an elevator and experience some of the best views of the city from the other side of the river. The best way to get to the monument is by ferry to Almada then by bus or taxi, or you can even walk to the statue if you have the time and the energy! Alto do Pragal, Almada. Tel: 21 275 1000.
