Barcelona Weather and Climate |
Barcelona is a perfect holiday destination at any time of year. This multi-faceted, cosmopolitan city is blessed with a temperate Mediterranean climate that very rarely poses constraints to those planning a trip here and even if the temperature gauges do register sudden changes, the sheer diversity of what’s on offer should put all weather considerations aside. Spring temperatures are ideal for sightseeing, with average highs of approximately 18ºC and lows of 13ºC that are usually accompanied by long spells of sunshine. If your spring visit coincides with St. George’s Day, the patron saint of Catalonia (La Diada de Sant Jordi), on 23rd April, you’re in for a romantic surprise. This is the day when the Ramblas fill with books and roses as couples celebrate the equivalent of Valentine’s Day and give each other the traditional Sant Jordi presents, a rose for the women and a book for the men. Temperatures rise considerably in Barcelona in the summer, averaging highs of 27ºC and lows of 22ºC, and bringing higher levels of humidity. This is easily remedied with a trip to the beaches for a taste of the cool sea breezes and a fabulous seaside lunch or alternatively, to the shade of the wooded area in Tibidabo hill for a glimpse of the impressive Temple del Sagrat Cor with its spectacular views over the city. The long, hot summer days do bring added excitement to the city as traditional summer festivities, including the Corpus Christi, Sant Joan, Gràcia and Grec festivals liven up the city with firework displays, theatre, live music, dancing, drinking and eating in the streets. Cooler autumn temperatures, averaging highs of 20ºC and lows of 15ºC, are excellent for sightseeing and outdoor drinks and meals while colder winter temperatures, with average highs of 14ºC and lows of 8ºC, are sufficiently mild to make a discovery trip around Barcelona amidst the Christmas and New Year celebrations equally pleasant.
